Description

Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is a semi-synthetic chemical compound derived from coconut oil that serves as an amphoteric surfactant in personal care and household cleaning products. It is a fatty acid amide and a zwitterionic ammonium compound, meaning it carries both positive and negative charges. It is produced by reacting coconut oil (specifically fatty acids like lauric acid) with dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA).It appears as a viscous, clear to pale-yellow liquid that is highly soluble in water.

USES/BENEFITS

Gentle Cleansing: It is excellent for sensitive or dry skin because it cleanses without destroying the skin’s moisture barrier, often reducing transepidermal water loss compared to harsher cleansers.

Foam Stabilization: It enhances the texture and volume of lather in body washes, face washes, and soap formulations, providing a luxurious, creamy feel.

Viscosity Building: CAPB increases the thickness and viscosity of products, making them feel more premium and easier to apply.

Conditioning Properties: Beyond washing, it leaves skin feeling soft, smooth, and conditioned.

Irritation Reduction: It is frequently used in sulfate-free or “mild” formulas to mitigate the harsh effects of anionic surfactants.
